Chapter Eleven

Piper

The next couple of days followed the same pattern as the first day after Mal returned home. It started with him making us breakfast, then I would go into town for supplies while he worked out or went for a run. I would then make a light lunch before we both worked in the afternoon in our two separate downstairs spaces: him writing new songs and me creating designs. Around six-thirty, I would sort out dinner and afterwards we would either watch a movie or listen to some music.

It was a simple, peaceful existence and one I was grateful for.

I was beginning to question my feelings for Mal. During those late evenings when we in the movie room, we’d talk, telling each other about our lives. In comparison to what Mal had done in his life, I feared he would find me dull. After all, I wasn’t Cora Appleby. He’d told me all about their break-up and how he dealt with it by hooking up with a load of other women. While I was pleased he thought he could open up to me, hearing about his habit of sleeping with someone once, then moving, on troubled me. I didn’t want to become a notch on his bedpost. I liked myself too much for that.

On the third afternoon, the pile of balled-up pieces of paper was growing bigger the longer I worked. I was trying to produce a new design, but everything I drew was either wrong or way too ambitious for my current skill level. Frustration was getting the better of me and I was on the verge of giving up. What kept me going was the thought of creating some prototypes to test out. Ones that I could actually take to the guy in the souvenir shop and show him. I needed to sort out some tools and a space in which to work though. Bronte had given me a heads-up about there being a room at the community centre I might be able to use, although it would come at a cost and I didn’t know if I’d be free to use it whenever I wanted. The prospect of have to lug my stuff there and back every time I wanted to go there wasn’t appealing, because I probably wouldn’t be able to leave it there.

There hadn’t been any sounds from where Mal was working for a while. I was getting used to hearing the same chords over and over again as he tried to find the right phrasing for the song. Whatever he created sounded great to me. I often found myself humming along, usually when I was making dinner.

I lifted my head, hearing noise. Mal lurked in the doorway, his hands behind his back.

“You make me jump,” I said, lightly. “Is it time for a snack?” I made to stand up.

Mal rolled his eyes. “Seriously, you don’t have to wait on me hand and foot. I’m perfectly capable of getting a soda from the refrigerator or chips from the cupboard.
